Easy Onion Rings & Sauce

These are the easiest and yummiest onion rings you can make from scratch at home. The ice bath helps make them crisp, so while you could skip this step, I recommend doing it.

Ingredients:

  • 3 medium onions (I used Vidalias, but any sweet onion will work nicely)
  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 tablespoon paprika
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 egg, well beaten

  1. Make an ice bath in a large bowl with about two cups of ice cubes and the rest water.
  2. Slice the onions about a quarter inch thick, separate into rings, and place in the ice bath.
  3. Mix the next 4 ingredients in a medium bowl.
  4. In a separate medium bowl, mix the last two ingredients.
  5. Heat either a deep fryer or a skillet with about 2 inches of oil over medium heat.
  6. Dip the onion rings first in the flour mixture, then the milk mixture, and then back in the flour mixture.
  7. Fry the rings in batches (turning once if using a skillet) for about 5 minute, until a light golden brown. Drain on a rack so they don’t get soggy.

Sauce:

Ingredients:

  • 3 teaspoons mayo (I used Duke’s)
  • 1 teaspoon mustard (French’s)
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup
  • 1 tablespoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika

Just mix all ingredients together. All of them can be adjusted for taste or amount.
